The Gilded Age

The term Gilded Age was coined by Mark distich and Charles Dudley Warner in their book The Gilded Age: A tosh of Today (1873). The term refers to the gilding of a cheaper metal with a thin layer of gold, with a hint of the golden old age of a nations glory. Many critics at the time complained that the era was pronounced by ostentatious display, crass manners, semipolitical corruption, and shoddy ethics.[1]

Historians insinuate out that it was a time of enormous industrial, urban and uncouth issue that attracted millions of eager workers from Europe. Railroads were the major industry, but the factory strategy and mining were important as well, and labor unions began to be important.
